Pearls of Wisdom from Thuli Madonsela, over the years. She said that, “Through life I learned that the most important critic whose judgment of my action matters is my conscience.” And this was the last inspirational quote that was tweeted by her, days before her last day as Public Protector of South Africa. She remained on the post from 2009-2016.
For a long period of seven years. Thuli Madonsela has served as a Public Protector and has made headlines with findings of important investigations into high-level maladministration and not only this, Thuli Madonsela has also become a symbol of courage and justice in the wake of attacks from politicians and has always responded professionally when under pressure.
During her time in office Madonsela investigated maladministration with regards to non-security related upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead. She was attacked and threatened but she hadn’t taken a step back in fear, instead she responded back that she isn’t scared of such things.
The case went to constitutional court where Thuli Madonsela stated that, the Public Protector has three powers- the power to investigate, the power to report and the power to take appropriate remedial action.
She also said that South Africa could have achieved a lot more since 1994, if it’s wasn’t for maladministration.
Thuli Madonsela gave an advice, “The job is about protecting the public from improper conduct from what quarter it may come from. So stick to that job.”
